South Florida has undergone 20 years of development, building urban sprawl over much of the accessible backcountry. The Federally mandated Urban Growth Boundary, a line established to prevent development that encroaches on the Everglades, has stemmed the westward development. Now, getting access to the back country means finding a bridge over the Canals bordering Highway 27 or Krome Avenue.
One easily accessible access point with facilities and parking is Holiday Park, west of the intersection of Griffin Road and Highway 27. To the West, North, and South are canals and their levees that lead out into the backcountry. The area is managed by the South Florida Water Management District, who has established rules for use.
